God of our long-suffering night, you have walked with us on
our trails of tears and our long forced marches. You were there, when forced on
tired feet, we stumbled and lay trembling as our tormentors cheered. You were
there, when, dwelling in safety, we lived in unfounded fears. We heard you
crying and moaning with us even when we were defeated by our own hand and
conquered by the categories of our minds.
When we asked, where is our savior? You, with your patience waning, sighed; I will always be with you. Then, you ask, Is that not enough? The
question pierced our pain filled egos. At that moment, but only for a moment,
we saw the meaning of our suffering. Before our hearts turn to despair and
self-serving pity, lift from us all illusions and teach us to find meaning in
our suffering. That will be enough.
