We know a great deal about the myths that form the basis for the Viking-age heathen religion, but little about the rituals and practices. Archaeological research can shed new light on this area, notably in the beliefs and rituals surrounding death and the afterlife. The Viking people believed that the line between life and death was gray and blurry, and that some people crossed from one side to the other multiple times.
Join us for an adventuresome look at the Viking-age beliefs about the afterlife, and at those aspects of a man or woman that were believed to be immortal.
Dr. William R. Short is an independent scholar and manager of Hurstwic, LLC, a New England-based organization with an interest in all things Viking, focusing on the combat of the Vikings. Dr. Short’s most recent book is Men of Terror: a Comprehensive Analysis of Viking Combat, a summary of Hurstwic’s 20+ years of research in the field.
