Magical Happenings in April
Classes have been combined often of late, first during candidating week with the Rev. Stephen Schick and then when attendance was low during school vacation week. Kids enjoyed the second of three Magic Tournaments, when they had to work cooperatively to cross the raging rapids and climb through dragon caverns in order to face the dragon. In small groups they had to convince the dragon that humans are capable of kindness, bravery, persistence and creativity. Kids also worked on the bookplates for the hymnal supplements which were donated to the Unitarian Univeralists of Lowell, a new congregation, on April 29. Thank you to all who contributed generously to this project and to the kids for their work, as well!
Coming Soon to a Magic School Near You:
In May the Chalice Children (pre-k and kindergarten) will learn about our church as a place where we talk about God, as well as a place where we serve others. The Magical UU class (grades 1-6) will learn about the 6th and 7th Unitarian Universalist principles, affirming world community and the interdependent web. They will begin work on a play which will integrate the 7 principles they’ve learned this year. The World Religions class (grades 7-9) will learn about Buddhism and paganism.
May is Magic Month
It’s once again time for the adult to join the children in keeping track of their magical acts of kindness, courage, persistence and imagination. Beginning May 6, adults will be encouraged to bear witness to their own acts of magic, as the kids have throughout the year. You are also welcome to be a “tattle tale” and “tell” on other congregants for their magic acts. Slips of paper and gemstones will be available in the foyer for your use.
Be creative in this venture! Think up a random act of kindness or senseless act of beauty and surprise a neighbor or your boss. We will have cards available at church that you can leave anonymously on the site of your random act of magic. Be courageous: stretch yourself to try something new or scary. Consider doing one of the following in an effort to spread the magic through Hudson, Marlborough and our surrounding communities:
- Leave flowers on someone’s doorstep, whether stranger or friend
- Offer a compliment to a grocery clerk or waitress
- Clean up a neighborhood park
- Learn a new skill: roller skating, bridge, tennis, public speaking…
- Take up pottery or write a poem
- Give something of yours away, perhaps even to a stranger
Attitude of Gratitude
Thanks to the following volunteers for their help: Ted for teaching and especially for hours of work spent designing a bookplate for the hymnal supplements, Hilary, Leonor, Steve and Wilhelmina for their help in the nursery, and Erica, Jennifer, Lauren and Barbara for teaching.
