The vastness and complexity of the world’s problems can paralyze or embitter even the most resilient advocate of peace and justice. How can one person, one group, or one movement help move humankind toward a better future? In this sermon series, based on his most recent book Be the Change, Rev. Stephen Shick will explore how the practice of self-reflection, the empowering gifts of nature and history, and the acceptance of grace can help sustain our individual and collective efforts for peace and justice and make them more effective.

Drawing on four decades of professional experience as a social activist and minister, Rev. Shick will provide practical insight into how your life can witness to the change you seek.

Sunday Worship – “Mother’s Peace Day Peace Pole Dedication”
See also Mother’s Day Tea on Spirit and Community page
Following the Civil War a Mother’s Peace Day was proposed. Its intent was to encourage women to become peace makers so they would no longer have to send their fathers, husbands and sons to war. With that same intent we will dedicate a peace pole during worship this Mother’s Day. On the pole will be inscribed, in many different languages, the words “May Peace Prevail on Earth.”

By this action we join the more than 200,000 places around the world where similar poles have been erected. The pole will be planted in the soil where we last year placed 5,000 American Flags honoring those killed in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan; it will stand adjacent to our banner which reads “One World Living in Peace.”

The Dedication ceremony will be part of our Sunday worship service and be followed by our Mother’s Day Tea

Leader: Rev. Stephen Shick
Date & Time: Sunday, May 10, 10:30-11:30 a.m.
